Toivo Unt is indubitably the foremost mainstream double-bassist on the Estonian jazz scene for several decades, he also holds the bass-post with a symphony orchestra of Estonian National Opera.
His career as a bassplayer began at the end of 1960's and today ranks among the most famous Estonian and former Soviet Union jazzsoloists as Lembit Saarsalu, Tõnu Naissoo, Tiit Paulus, David Goloshtshokin, Igor Butman, Georgi Garanjan, Aleksander Rjabov etc.
Toivo Unt has recorded and performed with many great soloists including Ted Curson, Dave Brubeck, Frank Marocco, Judy Niemack, Joan Collaso, Ryo Kawasaki, David Kikoski, Kenny Werner, Bobo Stenson, also with groups as New York Voices, The Spirit of Life and others.
He is often visiting the Scandinavian countries and has participted in many constellations at different well-known jazzfestivals all over Europe (Pori, Belga, Stockholm, Debrecen, Toronto etc. )
He is also co-member in jazzprojects “Art Of Trio (Ryo Kawasaki, Brian Melvin) and “Classic In Jazz” ( Viatcheslav Novikov, Brian Melvin).
On the side of classical music among the many chamber music projects the most important are with Juri Alperten and Viatcheslav Novikov.
In 1999 Toivo Unt formed a group for perfoming the first jazz-ballet in Estonian National Opera and was the leader and manager of this project.
The program was compiled of Duke Ellington’s music and called “In The Mood”. Subsequently three other jazz-ballets were performed ( “Stillpoint”, “Black And White”, “Night And Day”)
He is the initiator and artistic director of International Festival NÕMME JAZZ.
